COMMUNITY and extended services at nusa
NUSA holds a strong commitment to the regeneration of, not only academic aspiration and success but to the investment in high social capital and community engagement. The vision at our academy uses the concept of character fitness as a basis for community cohesion and access: "People are your real differential, not the weights you use or how you use them, not the food you eat or the training regimes that you follow. No, it’s the characters, personalities and attitudes of the people in your organisation that determine your success or failure in any given situation.” Steve Black, fitness coach, British Lions.
The term 'character fitness' highlights that strength of character is the basis for all our achievements as individuals and in communities. Like physical fitness, though, such character is not just given or denied to a person or to a group of people; it’s not something we’ve either got or we haven’t. It is something we can work on; a quality that we can improve and perfect if we choose to do so. Character is found in a range of settings – often in the most difficult of circumstances – and it doesn’t depend on how much money you’ve got or how clever you are. It is possible, though, to deliberately set out to behave with character, and doing so strengthens the person for whatever they wish to achieve. Character is also something our friends and families help us to build – through shared values, shared effort and shared accomplishment.
NUSA is actively working with our community, in the Bilborough, Broxtowe, Strelley and Aspley areas and beyond, to celebrate the strengths and achievements of the area. For further information on what is happening and how to get involved, please explore the community and enrichment area.
