ACADEMY NURSE
Welcome to the Academy's NURSING SERVICE
Clare Riordan is the School Nurse at NUSA.
Clare is happy to answer any questions or concerns relating to the health of students at NUSA. This includese physical, mental, emotional and sexual health, alcohol or substance misuse, and family or peer troubles.
Each term Clare will addd some health information on this section of the NUSA website. There will also be links to teenage health sites where you can find extra information on a range of health and personal issues.
A Brief Overview of the Academy's Nursing Service:
- General health screen for all year 7 pupils.
- Immunisations - HPV (three injections - for more information click here) and school leaver boosters.
- C-card, chlamydia screening, levonal, pregancy testing (currently done off site, awaiting governors decision).
- Any referrals from staff, parents and pupils regarding concerns about physical, emotional and social health.
- Safeguarding.
- Referral and liaison with other community services.
- Involvement with pupil health care plans and the appropriate staff training.
Teaching: Clare is available to do any health related teaching sessions for classes, small groups and staff. We will also run short courses if needed. These may include topics such as:
- Diet and lifestyle
- Mental health
- Smoking
- Alcohol and drugs
- Sexual health (contraception, STI's, HIV and aids, pregnancy, puberty)
- Anatomy
- Ethical and moral dilemmas
- Medical conditions
- Child development and care
- First aid and accident prevention
- Personal hygiene
All the above will include activities, diversity issues, personal safety and local services. First Aid: The Nursing Service at NUSA does not cover first aid as the Academy has several onsite first aiders within the staff: these are contacted via Reception. These staff should be the first port of call for pupils. However, Clare is happy to give a second opinion if a first aider needs one.
