From Westminster to NUSA

Year 9 English students have this week been reflecting on a fascinating visit from Graham Allen MP, which took place on Friday 7th March. NUSA students had previously visited Westminster in February where they met up with the Nottinghamshire MP, who politely agreed to visit the students at NUSA. In preparation for his visit to NUSA, the student had been analysing Graham Allen’s voting record and discussed many of his areas of interest within lessons.

On the day students got straight into action by questioning Mr Allen about his role in challenging his own political party relating to the invasion of Iraq. Students were given detailed responses and were also offered the opportunity to reflect on the moral conundrums which are presented to MP’s.

The most captivating element of the session was a discussion led by Graham Allen MP relating to early intervention strategies. Students were given an insight in to the significant role pre-school year’s play in determining an individual’s future life chances. The students were captivated by the debate and left the session with a greater understanding of how politics affects us all.
